How to do it with Marshalltown Tools

Masonry Tips and Techniques

Capping

When you have laid block within two courses of the top of your wall, use a piece of wire mesh (screen) to plug the cores. As you finish laying the final two courses, fill the plugged cores with mortar and sink a bolt into the mortar (1/2" x 16" x thickness of cap). In the final two courses, two jamb blocks may be used to form the seat for floor or anchor joists. When the mortar has set and the bolts are secure, you're ready to secure the cap, which is generally one or two -2 x 8's.
