Concrete Tips and Techniques
Advantages
One of the advantages of working with
concrete is its versatility. Strength, texture and also its attractiveness can be achieved
in several ways. Reinforcing concrete with steel or wire mesh increases its strength.
Likewise, the kind of aggregate mixed with the concrete can increase or decrease the
strength of the final product. For example coarse gravel will increase the strength of
concrete.
An exposed-aggregate
finish may be desirable. Pour the base concrete and level the surface with a wood float,
making certain that you allow 3/8 to 1/2 inches from the top of the frame to accommodate
the extra aggregate. Sprinkle the aggregate uniformly over the surface by hand or with a
shovel. Use a wood float to embed the material into the concrete. Care should be taken not
to overdo this step as you may depress the aggregate too deeply. When the water sheen
disappears and the surface can support you on kneeboards without indenting the surface,
you are ready for the final step. First brush the slab lightly with a stiff nylon bristle
broom to remove excess mortar. Using your garden hose with a fine spray attachment, wash
the surface until there is no noticeable cement film remaining on the aggregate.
Keep all newly poured concrete covered for five to seven days with clean burlap or plastic sheeting. Be sure to hose it down every few days.
